My Opinion of Siteground

I have been using Siteground to host my website for many years and will probably continue to do so for many more. If you read some of my other blog posts, you will see that over the years I haven't really liked Siteground all that much. So, why do I still host my website on their servers? I will take my complaints from an earlier blog post and show you why my complaints weren't really valid.

Customer's use of disk space
Siteground has a bunch of limits on how much space can be taken up by certian file types. Do these limitations really matter to me? No. The limit is 5GBs for video files, 5GBs for archive files, etc. Well, my website isn't even 5GBs total, so it doesn't really matter.

Customer's use of inodes
I can only have a total of 150,000 files and folders in my account. Okay, so, what's the big deal? I only have around 30,000 right now. Thus, the limit here really doesn't affect me at all.

The Last Two Weeks

I have not blogged for the last two weeks because I wanted to create a few more photo albums. I ended up forgetting about both blogging and editing photos, so I have only created two photo albums in this two-week period. Here they are:

Sauk Mountain - 08/15/10

Walla Walla University - 08/24/10

There was a Barn

Near the end of last school year, Christian and I went to one of his neighbor's houses and learned a lot about how to work in 3D. One of the things we learned about was camera mapping, which I didn't really understand till last week when I saw a Blender Guru video about it. So, following his tutorial, I took my poly-window barn picture and turned it into a 3D world... here's the final result:

The Amazing Demo Trailer

Okay, so, I posted before about the project Christian and I worked on last school year. You might not have seen the video, so I decided that I'd give you a little preview. We created a trailer a few weeks after we finished the movie that we never really did anything with. The movie is about 20 times longer, but this will give you a feel for what the movie was like.

No Aurora Borealis

Were there northern lights the other night? Maybe. However, I was not lucky enough to see them. I went outside at about 12:30 trying to take lovely photos and didn't really get anything impressive. I found a website quite some time ago that explained how to take amazing photos of the stars without a telescope or any sort of tracking devices, but I haven't been able to find this site again. I've found plenty of other sites that have pretty poor-looking photographs though, very similar to the ones I got the other night.

A few hours earlier there were quite a few clouds outside, so at 12:30 I was happy to find out that the most of the clouds had decided to fly south for the winter. Although, even with no clouds, my pictures didn't really turn out. Here are the two best photos I managed to get:

The Sky

Teepee Falls

Two days ago I decided that it would be a good time to get some waterfall pictures due to the cloudy weather. After a little searching around, my family found out about Teepee Falls. We headed out the door and drove out to the "Suiattle River Road #26."

The instructions told us: "After around 10 miles, the road will cross over Big Creek on a big bridge you can't miss." We got to milepost 10 and saw this huge bridge over to the right that we couldn't miss. I didn't think it was there though since we were supposed to hike 100 vertical feet down to the waterfall and this bridge was only about 20 feet above the river. We kept on driving down to the end of the road and hiked around a bit trying to find another bridge that was higher, but eventually gave up and started driving back home.

On the way back down the road, we were watching for any places where a watefall might reside. After we got back to around mile post 6, we spotted a tiny, almost-invisible bridge that we didn't even see on the way in. We hopped out and spotted a waterfall about 100 feet or so below off in the distance. This was the place! Not exactly "a big bridge you can't miss."

We found the little trail leading down to the waterfall and soon reached the beautiful waterfall.

A Squirrel

Today my family went biking on some trail somewhere. When we stopped for lunch, a little squirrel came to bug us. It was so un-afraid of us it hopped onto the picnic table where we were sitting. We politely ordered it to leave, and watched it wander over to a nearby trash can, hop in, find some food, hop out, and start eating its lunch on the trash can. After a crow wandered over and watched the squirrel for a little while, the squirrel dropped a piece of food down to the crow (I don't know if it was intentional or not). The crow gladly accepted this free food as soon as the squirrel turned its back. The crow left and the squirrel came back over to us to plead for more food... you see interesting things when kids feed the wildlife too much.

Rosario Beach

Back on the church campout, I took quite a few pictures that nobody has seen since I completely forgot about them (like a lot of other photos). On the way to Walla Walla University a while ago (you'll also see pictures from that trip soon... I've been editing those), I spent most of the time in the car either editing photos or sleeping. One of the many photos I "created" was this photo.

School is Coming

It is hard to believe, but school is going to start in a little while. Today I was getting all my stuff ready. One of the things I get every year is a planner, calendar, assignment notebook, or whatever else you want to call it. This year I decided that I wanted to create my own to suit my own needs. I found several Excel documents that I could modify in Open Office to get the normal calendar year and month-by-month calendar stuff, but it was difficult trying to find a weekly calendar that was extremely simple. I didn't want any hours from 8 to 5 or anything. I wanted something like Mon-Fri with lines to write assigments on. I gave up after a few hours of searching and just hacked up a PHP->Bash->HTML code in Firefox->copy and print in Abiword script. At the very end of this blog post I will elaborate on this process...

After I finished printing out all of the actual calendar part, I had to create a little something to put on the front of the notebook.

A long, long time ago I decided that I needed to have some decent photos of the church and school, so I went and took some. I didn't have my Nikon D5000 at the time, so I was using my mom's Kodak EasyShare P712. Two photos were fairly nice. One of these photos I decided to use for this notebook. I made this one black and white since the printer I was using was kind of out ink...

Trust the Book

Lately I have been studying quite a bit like I have mentioned before. Today while I was studying, I was using a different book than normal and the questions were just strange. For the math section it was just giving me simple equations like adding, multiplying, etc. Some of the explainations also weren't that great like the one that explained that a radical sign without any superscript number in front of it was a square root... yeah... I knew that. Thus, when I got to a problem that I couldn't get one of the listed answers (multiple choice), I just assumed the book was wrong since it has been wrong before. Bad assumption... it turns out that there aren't 30 inches in a yard. =)

A few weeks ago my family went walking at a commonly-visited park near my house. I decided that my goal was to take pictures from a lot of angles. The building at the park was quite nicely designed, so I took plenty of pictures of it. I walked over to this area and couldn't help but take a picture.
